May 3, 2013: MIT Technology Review: How Today’s Sensors Could Make Tomorrow’s Cars Safer
Sensors in cars today could do more to reduce traffic accidents, and costs are coming down.
Top end Toyota Lexus LS will now have millimeter wave radar sensors which can brake a vehicle to avoid a collision.
Currently the highest 'relative speed' between vehicle which the vehicle can automatically brake is 25 MPH. Future versions to handle up to 37 mph.
Current limits on 'relative speed' are due to limits on how far out the millimeter wave radar sensor can see.
