Toyota to recall 3.8M vehicles over floor mats
Reported on Sep 29 by KEN THOMAS, Associated Press: Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it will recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States. This is the company's largest-ever U.S. recall. The recall is to address problems with a removable floor mat that alledgedly could cause accelerators to get stuck and possibly lead to a crash. The recall will involve models such as the Camry and the Prius. Toyota spokesman Irv Miller said until the company finds a fix, owners should take out the removable floor mat on the driver's side and not replace it. "A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop a vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death," Miller said. The recal may have been prompted by a San Diego Accident involving a police officer in San Diego.
NHTSA said it had received reports of 102 incidents in which the accelerator may have become stuck on the Toyota vehicles involved. "This is an urgent matter," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "For everyone's sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration."
The recall will affect 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350.

Toyota to replace 4M gas pedals that could jam
Nov 25, 2009, KEN THOMAS, Associated Press
Toyota Motor Corp announced Wednesday that it will replace accelerator pedals on about 4 million vehicles in the United States because the pedals can get stuck in the floor mats. Currently replacement pedals are not available. Therefore, Toyota will have dealers shorten the length of the gas pedals while the company develops replacement pedals for their vehicles. New pedals will be available beginning in April, and some vehicles will have brake override systems installed as a precaution.
The recall includes 3.8 million vehicles, including the 2007-10 model year Camry, 2005-10 Toyota Avalon, 2004-09 Prius, 2005-10 Toyota Tacoma, 2007-10 Toyota Tundra, 2007-10 Lexus ES350 and 2006-10 Lexus IS250/350. Toyota officials said about 4 million vehicles would be covered, including new cars and trucks sold since September and others manufactured since the recall was announced.
If a vehicle accelerator pedal becomes stuck and a driver can't dislodge it, Toyota advises drivers to press on the brake with both feet and then shift the vehicle into neutral, which will disengage the transmission. The automaker says drivers should continue braking until the vehicle comes to a stop. A driver can also try shutting off the engine or turning the key to the "ACC" position on the ignition. Drivers will not lose control of the steering or the brakes. But once the vehicle is turned off the driver won't have the benefit of power brakes or power steering. For vehicles that have a start/stop button for the engine, drivers are advised to hold the button for three seconds to turn it off.
For more information, owners can contact Toyota at 800-331-4331 or the NHTSA hot line at 888-327-4236.

Some additional information on the Toyota recall announced in Nov 2009.
The NHTSA announcement included
"NHTSA also said that Toyota will, in addition to these announced vehicle-based remedies, install a brake override system on the involved Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES 350, IS 350 and IS 250 models as an “extra measure of confidence.” The brake override system would ensure the vehicle would stop if both the brake and the accelerator pedals are simultaneously applied. NHTSA is particularly pleased that Toyota is taking this additional step."

Jan 29, 2010: News and Observer, Toyota gas-pedal recall widens
Toyota offered its most detailed description of the problem: Condensation can form in the mechanism that connects the foot pedal to the car's engine, causing friction that prevents the pedal from smoothly springing back when the driver eases up.
The gas pedal system recall includes 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2008-2010 Sequoia.
The recall even spread beyond Toyota. Ford Motor Co. stopped production of some full-sized commercial vehicles built by a Chinese joint venture because they have accelerators built by the same parts supplier as in the Toyota recall.
Toyota said the maker of the faulty gas pedal systems, CTS Corp. of Elkhart, Ind., was cranking out replacements at three factories, and that some of them already been shipped to Toyota.
But there was no estimate for how long it would be until customers can get their cars fixed. The parts are being made at CTS plants, but Toyota has not said where they're going within its system of plants and dealers.

Jan 31,2010: Associated Press:
On Monday February 1st, 2010 at 630 AM EST Toyota plans to give details on pedal fix
Replacement parts are expected to arrive by Thurs or Friday.
The fix apparently involves slipping a shim into an area where springs push the gas pedal back to its resting position after a driver has eased off the gas.
The pedal recall is separate from a recall involving floor mats that can bend and push down accelerators.
The two recalls combined affect more than 7 million vehicles worldwide, threatening to tarnish the brand image of an automaker that had prided itself on quality.
