Tesla Loses the Brains Behind Autopilot

Post by MSI »

From MIT Technology:
  • The company that currently supplies Tesla with computer chips and algorithms to power its Autopilot autonomous driver aid, Mobileye, has announced that it is to stop working with the automaker. The Israeli company, which recently joined a new partnership with Intel and BMW, says it plans to focus it attentions on systems that lead to full autonomy rather than the semi-autonomous technology found in Tesla’s cars. Elon Musk has said that it will not have a material impact on Tesla’s plans. It’s unclear which company ended the relationship, though Mobileye has indicated that the split is a result of differing opinions between the two companies over the recent fatal Tesla crash.
On that occasion, Autopilot failed to discern the white side of a lorry from the sky behind it.
A preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board into that incident now suggests that the Tesla Model S involved in the accident was traveling at 74 mph in a 65-mph zone when it hit the truck, and that the vehicle was definitely being controlled using Autopilot.
