Vehicle Recalls, Part 2

Post by brian »

June 21, 2010: This thread is Part 2 of a thread used to post news on vehicle recall notices OTHER than Toyota. This is a follow-up to the Vehicle Recall Thread. You should also check the NHTSA Savercar.gov Safety Recalls Page

June 18, 2010: Volvo Recalling 500 cars for Shifter Problem. The gearshift lever assembly on 2010 S40 sedans and V50 wagons, and on 2010-11 C30 hatchbacks may not have been tightened. If the assembly comes loose it may not be possible to engage, disengage or shift gears which can increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

July 26, 2010: Washington Post reported that Nissan recalls 51,100 hatchbacks over fuel spills
Nissan is recalling 51,100 of its Cube hatchbacks in the United States and Canada because of possible problems with fuel spilling during rear end collisions. NHTSA safety tests found more fuel spilled than federal standards allow. The spillage occurred during rear end crash tests at 50 miles per hour where the vehicle also spun onto its side.
The recall covers model year 2009 and 2010 Cubes made between Jan. 30, 2009 and July 30. It includes 45,700 in the United States and 5,400 in Canada.

August 24, 2010: NY Times Grand Cherokee Is Investigated for Gas Tank Danger

NHTSA said on Tuesday it would grant a consumer group’s request to investigate whether an estimated three million Jeep Grand Cherokees had gas tanks that were too vulnerable to fires after a rear impact. The petition to investigate the 1993–2004 Jeeps was made last October by the Center for Auto Safety, which says the gas-tank design is defective.
The petition was based on research by Motor Vehicle Fire Research Institute who's findings "clearly show the danger of the gas tank being mounted behind the rear axle".
From the MVFRI website:
  • "The Motor Vehicle Fire Research Institute (MVFRI) is an independent, nonprofit, applied engineering and physical sciences organization specializing in automobile fire safety research. The Institute uses multidisciplinary approaches to problem solving including real-world data analysis, computational models, component testing, and full-scale vehicle tests. MVFRI performs objective research to support the safety needs of consumers, industry, and government."

Sept 1, 2010: LA Times: Reports of steering problems in 2011 Hyundai Sonata prompt NHTSA investigation
  • The cars can suffer a separation in the steering shaft assembly that results in complete loss of steering capability, a report says. Another report says a bolt in the steering system can become loose.
About 16,000 Sonatas might be involved
The 2010 Kia Soul owner reported that the steering shaft decoupled from the steering wheel as the vehicle was being driven, resulting in a complete loss of control. Additionally, the driver said the decoupled steering shaft fell into a position that interfered with the ability to apply the brakes. The complaint said the vehicle was 2 months old and had been driven 4,300 miles when the steering mechanism failed

Aug 18, 2010: Steering issues spur Mazda recall; GM recall targets seatbelts
  • Mazda Motor Corp. has recalled 215,000 Mazda3 and Mazda5 sedans because they can experience a sudden loss of power steering while the car is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash, federal safety regulators said Tuesday.
Meanwhile, General Motors Co. said it was recalling about 243,000 SUVs to inspect the safety belts in the second row of seats in the vehicles. In some instances, the buckles on the seatbelts can become damaged in such a way that passengers believe they are latched in when they are not

Sept 26, 2010: Hyundai recalls 139,500 Sonatas in US on steering
Hyundai is voluntarily recalling 139,500 Sonata sedans in the U.S. because of a manufacturing defect that could cause drivers to lose steering control. The recall affects 2011 models built between Dec. 11, 2009 and Sept. 10.
Some of the cars have steering column shafts with connections that may not have been tightened enough or were improperly assembled. As a result, the steering wheel could become separated from the column or a driver could lose the ability to properly steer the car.

Sept 29, 2010: USA Today: Mini Cooper steering probe may signal industry-wide issue
The recent spate of complaints and issues with the steering controls of several vehicles might be a harbinger of a deluge of future steering complaints.
The BMW Mini brand is under federal investigation because power steering on as many as 80,000 2004 and 2005 Mini Cooper models could fail. The probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is about sudden and unexpected loss of power-steering assist. That makes the car hard to steer and could cause the driver to lose control. NHTSA lists no mishaps due to the problem, and Mini says it knows of none.
These issues come as automakers are switching to electric motors instead of hydraulic pumps to provide power-steering assist. Electric power-steering systems (EPS) can add 0.1 of a mpg, or more, by eliminating drag on the engine caused by hydraulic pumps. But EPS is hard to tune to make it feel similar to the age-old hydraulic systems. It can seem numb or too light to drivers.

Oct 21, 2010: NHTSA issues Consumer Advisory: NHTSA Repeats Caution to Owners of Various Recalled Ford Vehicles on Fire Risk
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today reminded owners of various makes and models of Ford vehicles previously recalled for faulty cruise control systems to make sure they take their vehicles into Ford dealers for repairs. If not repaired, the vehicles can catch fire, even if they are turned off, parked and unattended.
As more of the affected vehicles enter the used car market, the agency is concerned that most used car buyers don’t know whether the used vehicles they purchased were ever returned to dealers for the needed repairs. NHTSA is urging consumers who may have bought these recalled vehicles on the used-car market to make sure the repairs were actually done.
Owners of the affected vehicles should immediately visit a Ford web and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if their particular Ford vehicle has been recalled for the problem and if the repair has been made. That web site is http://www.ford.com/owner-services/cust ... nformation. The vehicle’s VIN can be found on the dashboard and on the certification label located on the door latch post next to the driver’s seating position.
According to NHTSA, approximately 17.5 million Ford vehicles have been involved in the recalls since 1999 because of a faulty cruise control disconnect switch which can overheat and burn - potentially causing a vehicle fire long after the engine has been turned off. NHTSA noted that Ford Motor Company has been diligent in contacting owners of the affected vehicles, including sending re-notification letters to owners in many cases. Despite notification efforts, NHTSA estimates that there may be several million vehicles still on the road with the dangerous defect.
The agency is also advising owners of the affected Ford vehicles to watch for potential warning signs of an imminent fire. Possible warning symptoms include a cruise control system that can’t be activated or stops working; brake lights that stop working; low brake fluid; ABS and brake warning lights that are illuminated on the dashboard; or the inability to get a vehicle out of park.
Any buyer of a new or used vehicle, regardless of make or model, can check with http://www.safercar.gov to see whether any recalls apply to the vehicle they are interested in. All consumers can also go to the same site and sign up for immediate, automatic email notification of any new recalls affecting their vehicles, tires or child safety seats.
Here is a list of Ford vehicles that have been recalled for the defective cruise control system:
  • ?1992-2003 E Series (all including Econolines)
    ?1992-1998 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis/Town Car
