Road Rage

Post by brian »

Over the years we have been involved with reconstructing cases which involved road rage. This thread will be used to post links to studies, etc on the topic. The reason it came to mind was an article in the NY Times:
Canadian Politician Charged in Death
By IAN AUSTEN, September 1, 2009 (A version of this article appeared in print on September 2, 2009, on page A4 of the NY Times New York edition)
OTTAWA — As the high-profile attorney general for Ontario, Michael Bryant had championed severe and controversial traffic safety laws. On Tuesday, he was charged with criminal negligence causing death and with dangerous driving causing death in an unusually violent episode of road rage involving a bicyclist.

Here's some starter information from the NHTSA website:
Aggressive Driving vs. Road Rage. There is a difference.
Aggressive driving is a traffic offense; road rage is a criminal offense.
• Road rage is defined as "an assault with a motor vehicle or other dangerous weapon by the operator or passenger(s) of another motor vehicle or an assualt precipitated by an incident that occurred on a roadway."
• Road rage requires willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety ) has sponsored research related to agressive driving and roadrage:
Aggressive Driving by Louis Mizell
Road Rage by Matthew Joint
Driver Aggression by Connell & Joint

Here's a study which may hit "close to home":Study: Where does your city rank among the road-rageous?
