European progress on road deaths 'disappointing', says ETSC
Safety body suggests that the EU will miss its target of halving fatalities by 2020

Which begins:
  • The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has issued a solemn rebuke to the continent's efforts to cut road deaths since 2010.
Last year, 22,650 people lost their lives on EU roads - a 3% reduction compared to 2018.

But ETSC's latest analysis reveals that "progress across Europe has disappointed over the last nine years".
    • "22,660 people lost their lives on EU roads in 2019, representing a 3% reduction compared to 2018. Out of the 32 countries monitored by the ETSC Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) programme, 16 reduced road deaths in 2019 (Fig.1). The best results were achieved by Luxembourg with a 39% decrease, Sweden with 32%, Estonia with 22% and Switzerland with 20%. Road deaths increased in 12 countries, while progress stagnated in four. "
COMMENT: Interesting they don't seem to talk/present vehicle miles traveled/death rate per mile/per driver?
  • Since if changing/increasing population/miles driven shouldn't that be considered instead of a simple 'road deaths'?
