Are Car Crash Deaths Increasing During COVID Lockdown?

Post by MSI »

Have seen some postings and videos, some trying to be funny, some trying to end any lockdown/business closures by equating COVID deaths to car crash deaths.
The most recent was on Facebook a funny video talking about thousands and thousands of extra deaths due to driving during COVID and so joking that we should extend the lockdown...
funny...but...obviously distortion of the facts to folks who know...
but to others?
they might believe the numbers...
And there are folks trying to END the lockdown equating the two.
THAT is what has me reacting with facts instead of laughs!

When COVID deaths hovered around 30,000 some folks thought: wait, we have that many deaths in car crashes and WE DON'T LOCK DOWN DUE TO CAR CRASH DEATHS?!!!!
Add that to news that deaths by vehicle crashes are INCREASING during the LOCKDOWN!

A few Facts: but for arguments sake, lets assume the HIGHEST % INCREASE is ALL YEAR!
  • If motor vehicle deaths increased 36% IN A YEAR
  • they would "Only" be ~36,000 + 36%(36,000) =
  • 47,000 Fatalities IN A YEAR.
So false equivalency and bad joke. COVID is NO JOKE. Death by Motor Vehicle is NO JOKE.
COVID, for which data is available is NOW at around 150,000 in only 1/2 a Year!

As a comparison here is the historical annualized deaths by motor vehicle from NHTSA
NOTE: THESE ARE ANNUAL, MEANING PER YEAR, ABOVE CHART IS PER DAY!
