NO MORE Dongle Issues!! (Topic was Dongle Issues)

Post by PaulM »

July 2015: with the release of medit3D/msmac3D/medit2D
NO MORE DONGLES!!!!
Please see the medit3D General Q&A page for additional information

This applies to all McHenry programs ( Medit32, msmac08, etc ), thus the post is in this forum.
Medit32 and its brethren require both the Sentinel Dongle device and the disk file licensekey.txt to run. Various checks and messages are in place to verify them.
If Medit32 starts out with a message about 'not finding the dongle', here are some thing to check / try.
1) Is the Dongle illuminated? (this only applies to USB dongles)?
2) When you installed Medit32, did you select 'full install' of the Sentinel drivers ? This is very important ! Please, do not 'pick and choose' options there.
3) Try running msmac08 directly ( double click on c:\msoft\msmac08.exe). It will complain about not having been told what SI5 to process - click through that, and see if it complains about not seeing the dongle ! If it goes to a screen that shows your Dongle serial, then it saw the dongle correctly.
4) In the MISC/ folder under msoft, you will see Sentinel Protection Installer 7.4.2.zip - try unzipping that and running it. It will ask to over-write old drivers - say yes. Allow it to perform a 'full install'.
5) USB dongles: remove the dongle during any install/update of the dongle drivers and/or be sure once installation/update is complete, remove and then reconnect the USB dongle (this only has to be done once and only for USB dongles). The updated software needs to detect the USB dongle. It can not inherit a detection from a previous version of the Sentinel software.
The next new full install distro of Medit will include Safenet Sentinel drivers version 7.5, wherein they made some changes to handle Vista64 ( 64 bit ) better, but this should have no other benefit over 7.4.

Q: I've recently got a new notebook computer and their is not a port for the dongle to work on. What can I do?
A: The original dongles were parallel port dongle which you connected to the printer port of your computer. For the past few years, all new dongles are USB dongles, which connect to the USB port of your computer. Many of the newer notebook computers do not have a parallel port. Please take a look at the Extra dongle order form. This form can be used to add extra dongles to work with home/laptop/office computer (and to avoid the 'dongle shuffle'). The form should be self explanatory, but please let us know if you have any questions.

July 19, 2010: If you move to a new computer or experience issues with 'dongle not found' (we've had a user have issues with a notebook in docking station vs having device in USB port)
First be sure your licencekey.txt file is in the msoft installation directory: see Unexpected expired license message
Then you might visit the dongle troubleshooting page put out by the manufacturer:

March 2012: Two changes in sentinel device/dongle offerings for McHenry Software products:
  • 1) no more parallel dongles. No one wants em so we don't have em. And so unfortunately we also no longer offer a dongle swap.
    2) we now offer a 'dongle free' option.
For international clients we have had a 'dongle free' version. It locks the program to a specific computer. We still recommend the USB dongle for general use but this adds a level of convenince for notebook computers or computers with limited USB ports.
Please see our Extra dongle order form.
