Feb 15, 2010: Are the new complaints about deaths in Toyota vehicles actually related to a mechanical defect? Or a result of the press and lawyer and LaHood/NHTSA created hysteria? Only time will tell.
On acceleration issues, the government has received complaints during the past three weeks alleging 13 deaths. The deaths allegedly tied to this problem happened in nine crashes between 2005 and 2010.
On Prius brake issues, when NHTSA opened its investigation of Prius on Feb. 3, the government had received 124 consumer complaints. Through Feb. 11, the government has now received nearly 1,000 new complaints for a total of 1,120 complaints alleging 34 crashes, six injuries and no deaths.
Only through thorough investigations of the complaints and associated accidents will we know if the rash of complaints is legitimate or pile on mentality.
The pile on mentality is that if you're in a crash in a Toyota, blame it on a defect du jour!
