HOWTO use the Polygon Shape for Collision Interaction v4.0

Post by MSI »

This originally prepared for version 3.20
see recent posting below for additional enhancements for ver 4.0

We've prepared a HOWTO video for the msmac3D extension to use the actual 3D polygon shape of the vehicle for collision interaction.
This is an extension of the information in Some SMAC users have encountered issues with the original SMAC definition of rectangular vehicles.
Particularly In low speed impacts.
  • While SMAC has decades of proven validation and correlation with real world crashes using the rectangular definition of the vehicle,
  • The timing of initial contact can be an issue to explain (forces before the rounded corners touch!), particularly in lower speed collisions.
Below are links to individual tasks presented in the video

A while back we added an enhancement as follows
When we follow the fixed bumper height sometimes it may not work well all-around the vehicle.
So we have to use variable bumper height with a range to pick outer-most point on the model with in that range.
You can set minimum and maximum height to scan the model to pick the outer-most point.
You set that in the Setting window. Unit is feet like you see all the units in the Graphics is Feet.
Go to Settings (the Gearbox at top)
(see update NOTE BELOW)

Then select MISC Tab

You can set a range of increments etc
polygon2.png

then use the display to see how it matches the vehicle periphery
toggle it on/off to reset/regenerate the points when you change the option in the Settings->Misc tab
use polygon.png
use polygon.png (31.55 KiB) Viewed 10332 times

some additional clarification

Units are in feet, and they are the bumper height range. Cover the bumper height within this range, and in some cases try increasing it.

If bumper height is 20" (1.666'). You can enter min 1.25 max 1.75, inc 0.25. (This inc is vertical)
Entering 0.25 here will check at 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75 and choose outer most one of the 3.
make sure the max is below the side mirrors

Pitch between points is the distance between points around the periphery of the vehicle

update
we've changed the polygon scan options to the Vehicle properties dialog
  • click on the vehicle
  • click on the yellow duck
    vehicle dialog.jpg
    vehicle dialog.jpg (30.85 KiB) Viewed 9734 times
    • and there on the bottom of the dialog are the polygon scan options
