Occupant Movement in a Rollover Crash

Post by MSI »

A video we prepared with Flying Foto Factory a decade or more ago demonstrating the concepts around how occupant injuries and roof crush relate.
Includes illustrations of:
  • Movement of a belted front seat occupant
    • During Rollover the occupant leaves the set and loads the belt
    • Prior to Roof Landing the occupant contacts the roof interior
    • The roof contacts the ground
    • The Head Stops
    • The occupant Body Continues Down Causing Nexk Injury
    • Weight of Vehicle Coming Down Causes Roof Crush
    • No Contact Between Seat Cushion and Occupant
Motions of Belted Occupant in Sever Rollover
    • Occupant on Outside of Rollover
    • Occupant has initial Head Clearance
    • Seat Cushion Compresses
    • As Vehicle Rolls Head Contacts Roof as Seat Cushion Unloaded
    • Head and Roof Contact Ground
    • Continued Body Motion Towards ground loads neck in Severe Rollover
    • Belt Remains Locked and in Position
    • Roof Deflection Occurs Subsequent to Neck Injury
    • Gap Remains Between Seat Cushion and Occupant
