NOTE: Oct 2020 many references recently posted up so see more recent posts on this topic below

Mar 2010: Every time I see someone posting a question to a newsgroup about the validity of speedometer needleslaps in vehicular collisions (another one just posted on the Yahoo INCR newsgroup), I am reminded of a late night way back in 1998 when i wrote a poem for the TARO ARNews newsgroup (I believe the site is now gone...:-()

A Needle(slap) in a Haystack.
  • a poem...

    A vehicle strikes an object,
    perhaps another car,
    kinetic energy is dissipated,
    crushing very far.

    The engine compartment is mangled,
    wires, cables and suspension pound,
    pitching and yawing the vehicle,
tires lose contact with the ground.

At some point in this carnage,
a random occurrence becomes a fact,
because there are some people who believe,
    in a Needle(slap) in a Haystack!
