Crush analysis on a repaired vehicle?

Post by brian »

Q: Can anyone provide any references to papers or textbooks that address the issue of doing crush analysis on vehicles after they have been repaired, specifically making a determination of delta V from an examination of a repaired vehicle?
A: The choice/decision to replace and/or repair a vehicle component subsequent to a collision is an insurance/repair shop/consumer choice item and it is does not reflect in any quantifiable way anything which could be used in a crush analysis.
One has to wonder if the repair shop might influence the `deltaV estimate' if they chose to replace components due to cosmetic blemishes and/or the need for additional business?
Heck, What happens if the repair outfit pads the estimate/repair bill OR forgets to charge for something??!!
Then that type of damage estimate would be higher or lower than 'actual'?
And what is the actual force required to require a component to be repaired? How do you quantify that force?
'Experts' who read repair orders and come up with theories and estimates for impact speed change are doing nothing more than dressing up a WAG.
Perhaps to perform a 'crush analysis' for a vehicle which has been repaired one should "consult a tarot card reader".
