With advanced sensors, cars can drive themselves!

Post by brian » Thu Jun 03, 2010 1:16 pm

June 1, 2010: From the Washington Post comes article With advanced sensors, cars become increasingly capable of driving themselves
Cars now have sophisticated sensors based on cameras, radar and lasers. These sensors currently can provide drivers with adaptive cruise control and semi-autonomous parking systems. Ultimately, these sensors may mean bypassing the fallible humans behind the wheel.
Traffic accidents kill about 37,000 people a year in the United States, with driver error a contributing factor in more than 90 percent of those accidents.

Oct 10, 2010: More on auto-pilot cars, from the NY Times Google Cars Drive Themselves, in Traffic
A project Google has been working in secret but in plain view on vehicles that can drive themselves by using artificial-intelligence software that can sense anything near the car and mimic the decisions made by a human driver.
Autonomous cars are years from mass production, but technologists who have long dreamed of them believe that they can transform society as profoundly as the Internet has.

Nov 18, 2010: And in a similar vein, from an insurance journal report Researchers Building Car for Blind Drivers
  • The National Federation of the Blind and Virginia Tech plan to demonstrate a prototype vehicle next year equipped with technology that helps a blind person drive a car independently. The technology, called "nonvisual interfaces,'' uses sensors to let a blind driver maneuver a car based on information transmitted to him about his surroundings: whether another car or object is nearby, in front of him or in a neighboring lane.

Jan 2011: As part of the series in this months magazine on AI as in Artificial Intelligence, wired has an interesting article on AI Autos:Leave the driving to us!
From the article:
  • Think about it: Antilock brakes know when to back off the pedal. Airbags know that you just smacked into something. Stability control knows that you just overcooked your Volvo into that hairpin and need a little help to stay out of the ditch. Your nav system knows where you are, your wipers know it’s raining, that annoying seat-belt chime knows you’re flouting the law. In short, modern cars are loaded with sensors and computing power
The marquee innovation that made intelligent cruise control possible is the drive-by-wire throttle: the introduction of motor skills to the automotive body.

May 2012: Volvo is also getting into the auto-drive game: Volvo’s self-driven car convoy treks 125 miles across Spanish motorway
The article begins:
  • Motorists may soon be able to use their cellphones while driving without fear of getting a ticket. In fact, they may be able to take their eyes off the road completely.
Volvo has successfully completed a public test of a self-driven convoy of cars. A human driver led the convoy of three self-driven vehicles, which mimicked the lead driver's actions through a wireless link.
The four vehicles completed a 125-mile voyage across a Spanish roadway traveling at an average speed of 52 mph.
