which includes:
- A $150 monitor which flashes green when all is ok and is worn on back of hockey helmet
- The light is part of an impact sensor called Checklight and made by Reebok.
- The device is a black skullcap with an electronic strip and three lights on the back. Green=OK, Yellow=moderate impact, Red=severe impact
- The Checklight relies on an accelerometer and a gyroscope to measure the force of an impact.
- Experts note that these are imprecise tools, insufficient by themselves to indicate a concussion.
- An impact that leaves one player concussed may have little effect on another.
- Reebok would not disclose its thresholds for determining moderate and severe collisions, only that the Checklight measures linear and rotational acceleration and the duration of the impact.
- Might they be using some modified form of the HIC or Head Injury Criterion?
We will post up as we find out what they use for changing the color of the lights.
It sounds like a step in the right direction for the protection of athletes.
