Suzuki Swift launch at roundabout in Rabien, Poland

Post by MSI »

Great video of a vehicle launch in Poland posted to twitter and covered on autoblog site: Here's the video...we edited it for only the launch portion and added a slow motion:
You can also watch it from a playlist with many other recent crash videos: and here is a sequential still we created (crude but gives an idea of the path up, up, and away!

Here's the location in google maps: Might be time to give a simulation a try!

Here we did a crude sequential edit of the video simply chopping things to leave the vehicle as it rises:[/url]
  • Note: we could edit frames of the video to show only the vehicle and leave them static which would be much better...but the time required...
Apr 16th i added a slow motion on end to this video

You can also watch it from a playlist with many other recent crash videos: and here's a still pic. Very crude but gives idea of the path

Some observations

First anyone who can get additional information on that launch i'd love to hear from.
I set up a quick and simple simulation and approximated the launch ramp (visually, so obviously having a direct measurement of the ramp would be nice!)

A number of items came into focus.
  • 1) first they mention 200 feet to landing, is that from the take off point? or the end of circle?
    • Since at 200 feet unless it went to the right a lot there isn't a building to stop/slam into etc
quick simulations demonstrate 200 feet can be achieved with that ramp with 65-75 mph or so launch speed but no consideration of landing location/orientation (details details details!)
    2) Where did it land? and what orientation?
    • if you look at take off it is with tail down (as noted by folks responding to this thread) wheres as a front wheel drive 60/40 % weight you'd think it would flatten or pitch forward UNLESS it is still on the way UP (meaning more speed) however that might mean 80-90+ speed and it would travel farther than 200 feet...
      UNLESS
the interaction with the launch ramp displaced some bricks, took off more energy, etc so back of vehicle sees different ramp than front end.
We have a good idea of the path from the video and overhead pics (see pic below note to left of 3 signs in center area so good pre-launch path!)
Lastly anyone nearby the crash site can they tell the specific location of the camera?
    • Some responded that probably on the light post but to pass so close it would mean the vehicle veered to right (and so that may be so as mentioned earlier landing area probably to right of path and then landing orientation what was it? any ideas?)
Very interesting launch investigation and would love to do more detailed simulation but missing some required pieces of the puzzle.

Here's the launch followed by 2 slow motion versions to enebale observing the vehicle reaction to the launch

Got some additional information from Zyg Gorski and his brother Ed Gora
First the local TV station:

From which i got the landing area and then used Google Earth to map the path out

and then the actual path.

will see about simulating this in the near future!

Here's a quick first pass simulation at 80 MPH of the launch and travel to landing impact into a building per recent updates.
Tried some locations, and different focal lengths for the roadside camera but couldn't match. Will revisit later.
NOTE:This is a DRAFT:
  • We only spend an hour or so preparing these visual displays of our msmac3D simulation.
We set these up when we find something about the crash interesting.
We don't have the measurements and other information to perform a full reconstruction.
We don't spend additional time to add the houses, background, etc.
This is simply a quick demonstration of some of the 3D modeling capabilities of our msmac3D simulation and how it can help with understanding 'what happened' with a vehicle and crash dynamics.
