- With over 120,000 members in 140 countries the IME has been the heart of the mechanical engineering profession since 1847.

- Founded in 1847 in Birmingham, their original statement of our purpose was:
- "To give an impulse to invention likely to be useful to the world", which is not so different from our present mission statement to "Improving the world through engineering".

As well as caring for rare books and archives relating to the history and development of mechanical engineering at 1 Birdcage Walk, they have been running the Engineering Heritage Awards since 1984.
